Collingwood surge past Saints in the wet

A BRAVE Collingwood side has beaten St Kilda by nine points in what was an intense and water-logged struggle at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies won 12.17 (89) to 12.8 (80) in the freezing and consistently wet conditions, despite failing to kick a goal in the third term while allowing the Saints to amass five.

Dale Thomas was sensational in the courageous win, despite being cruelly robbed of a goal late in the game when the boundary umpire made a late out-of-bounds call, while Dane Swan continued his fine season with 29 disposals. The Pies never gave in, even after handing the Saints a 21-point lead early in the last term, and doggedly ground out their ninth win for the season in front of a passionate crowd of 57,247 that braved the extreme elements. The Magpies were superior at ground level and looked the slicker outfit in the challenging conditions throughout the first half.
