Pies Home in a Thriller

Collingwood staged a remarkable turnaround to storm home over the Kangaroos and win by three points in the Saturday afternoon match played in good conditions at the MCG. The Magpies were down by 25 points at the last change, yet somehow rose from three forgettable quarters to boot seven last-term goals to two.

The Magpies hit the lead for the first time in the match in the 24th minute of the last quarter when Scott Burns calmly goaled from 40 metres out directly in front after winning a soft free kick for high contact from Kangaroos defender Daniel Pratt. Shannon Grant squandered a gilt-edged chance to put the Kangas back in front with only moments left after winning a 50-metre penalty that gave him a shot from 15 metres. With two minutes left the 256-game veteran carelessly hit the post – even if umpire Steve Wenn erred in giving Grant the advantage by some metres it was an astonishing miss.

The Kangaroos will also rue their inability to finish off the contest much earlier, as they missed a host of gettable chances marred by bad kicking and a litany of blunders. First-gamer Lindsay Thomas, who hacked at a ball in the dying stages for the last behind of the game, was the main offender, as he finished with five behinds.
Collingwood’s best were defender James Clement, brothers Heath and Rhyce Shaw, and utility Tarkyn Lockyer, who sparked the comeback with an outstanding last quarter and a snapped goal. Recruit Paul Medhurst also played well in the first and last terms and was the Pies’ only multiple goal kicker, with two.

Kangaroos rover Brent Harvey played a great game and booted three goals, while Grant (two), Pratt and captain Adam Simpson were among the best while Hamish McIntosh had the better of an out-of-sorts Josh Fraser.
